Within a few kilometres are:

Guiglia, the nearest village, with all necessary shops, an open-air swimming-pool, and some good restaurants. A regional park and nature reserve (home to some rare fauna and flora, and containing curious rock formations), an atmospheric Romanesque church, and well-marked walks and mountain bike paths.  (Mountain bikes can be rented in Guiglia.)

Within a short drive are:

  • Vignola, a lively market town with an impressive castle and an large co-op supermarket for easy shopping.
  • Cheese factories, this being an official Parmigiano-Reggiano area, where you can buy parmesan for half the cost in Britain (and see it being made!).
  • Remote villages such as Montecorone, with its church spectacularly perched on top of a precipitous hill.
